Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a long-term partner of Akvaplan-niva, has been granted funds for a bilateral research project. The financial contribution from the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia is about 6 mill. NOK. The title of the project is: "Development and implementation of methods for ecological monitoring of bays and shores of the Barents sea and the Arctic region, scenario modelling of emergency situations during transportation of petroleum products and radioactive waste, and experimental technologies for these areas protection from contamination under the periglacial conditions – MEMO-PRO". (Monitoring, Ecology, MOdeling – PROtection).

This spring, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science launched a call for proposals on joint studies with research institutes and universities from Sweden, Finland, Norway or the United Kingdom. In the competition, 56 applications were accepted and MMBI became one of four but the only academic institute among the winners. The other winners are: St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optic; Lomonosov Moscow State University and Korolev Samara National Research University.

Akvaplan-niva is a leading partner and also the only foreign partner of MMBI in MEMO-PRO.
