Environmental impact

At Akvaplan-niva, we conduct research on environmental impacts on ecosystems in both marine and freshwater environments. We combine expertise in environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, biology, social science, ocean modelling, remote sensing, and sensor-based environmental monitoring. We generate knowledge utilized by environmental authorities, the business sector, and research partners to address complex environmental challenges.

We collaborate with public authorities, research institutions, and stakeholders across sectors such as petroleum, industry, renewable energy (offshore wind, hydropower), aquaculture, and mineral extraction. We conduct both basic and contract research, developing the knowledge base required for management and decision-making.

Pollution, environmental contaminants, and risk We investigate how pollution affects organisms, ecosystems, and the state of the environment. Our work covers areas such as long-range transported pollution in Arctic ecosystems and local pollution in lakes and Norwegian fjords. We possess expertise regarding organic loading, organic environmental contaminants, metals, plastics, and microplastics. We also conduct research on the effects of pollution and other environmental stressors on species across various trophic levels.

Habitat types and vulnerable species We map and conduct research on marine species, habitats, and ecosystem types that may be particularly vulnerable to human activity and climate change. This includes research on environmental impacts on seabirds and marine mammals, vulnerable marine habitats and ecosystem components, as well as marine benthic organisms.

Seabirds and marine mammals Akvaplan-niva leads and collaborates on a wide range of research projects focusing on seabirds and marine mammals. Our interdisciplinary research combines ecology, physiology, and toxicology to investigate how rapid environmental changes and anthropogenic impacts affect marine predators and ecosystem health. Through innovative field- and laboratory-based studies, we develop and apply ethically responsible methods and next-generation research tools that provide vital insights into species vulnerability and resilience. Our work contributes to knowledge-based nature management, sustainable management, and informed decision-making processes for rapidly changing marine ecosystems.

Ocean modelling and pollutant transport We use ocean models to describe and understand physical processes in coastal and marine areas, including currents, waves, and the transport of particles and pollutants. This modelling is used to assess the dispersal of discharges, the environmental impact of various activities, and the exposure of vulnerable areas and species; it also serves as decision support for emergency preparedness, planning, and management. Governance, society, and coastal communities Environmental impact also concerns society, regulations, and decision-making. We conduct research on the management of marine and coastal areas, the regulation of activities affecting them, and how policy and management can contribute to viable coastal communities and sustainable industries.
