Ecosystem understanding
Our researchers have high competence in biodiversity, ecology, and ecosystem processes in sea ice, pelagic, and benthic habitats
Our expertise ranges from phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish to seabirds and marine mammals, in both coastal and open-ocean habitats. In addition, we are developing dynamic ecosystem models that link the physical, chemical, and biological systems. Good ecosystem understanding is critical to evaluate the impacts of climate change and human activities on the environment, and provides important perspectives for assuring that sustainability is central to economic development. We include socio-cultural dimensions in many of our research projects to contribute to a more holistic ecosystem-based management. Input from multiple stakeholder groups is important for assessing a broader perspective of sustainability.
