Full title: Turbulent mixing from the bottom up: Fluxes and dispersion at hydrothermal vents

Project management: Akvaplan-niva, Dr. Achim Randelhoff

Project partners: Akvaplan-niva, University of Bergen, Sun Yat-sen University, Centre National de la recherche scientifique & U Brest.

Funding: The Research Council of Norway

Main goal: Investigate how turbulent mixing is generated at a hydrothermal vent field and how vent effluents and other matter are mixed into and around the surrounding waters. In doing so, TURBOT will generate applicable knowledge to three principal ends: (a) Parameterization of marine dispersion, e.g. in the context of environmental assessments of deep-sea mining operations, (b) impact on marine biology and biogeochemistry, and (c) abyssal water mass transformation and global climate.
