Akvaplan-niva contributes to a science-based development of the Nenets region Russia

Alexei Bambulyak from Akvaplan-niva held a presentation at the international forum EcoArctic held in Naryan-Mar, Nenets region Russia this month. The forum is initiated and organized by the Administration of the Nenets Autonomous District and Rosneft, the Russia’s largest oil company.

The EcoArctic forum starts with lectures on geology and ecology given at schools in the Nenets region. After this follows the key forum event – the round table 'Actual issues of safe exploration of the Arctic and mitigation of industrial impacts on the environment'. The event ends with a sport competition among reindeer herders called 'Syamyanhat mereta' .

Alexei Bambulyak from Akvaplan-niva was invited by the organizers to give a talk on 'The Barents Sea ecosystem assessment – traditional and novel tools for monitoring and management'. Other talks were provided by: Administration of the Nenets Autonomous District, Rosneft, RN-Arctic-Shelf, Lukoil-Komi, East-Siberian Oil Company, Marine Research Centre of Lomonosov MSU, Arctic Research Centre, NArFU, Siberian Federal University, Komi Institute of Biology and Nenetsky zapovednik.

Akvaplan-niva has been working in the Nenets region and the Pechora Sea since early 1990s. We have been the lead partner in environmental impact assessments of the major Komi oil spill in the Pechora River delta, elaboration of the Nenets Environmental Database, organization of the EcoPechora conference and we are presently providing knowledge for the development of new environmental and aquaculture initiatives in the region.
