Ecosystem understanding

Our researchers possess expertise in biodiversity, ecology, and ecosystem processes across sea-ice, pelagic, and benthic environments. Our competence spans everything from phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish to seabirds and marine mammals, in both coastal and open-ocean areas.

A sound understanding of ecosystems is crucial for assessing the impacts of climate change and various forms of human influence on the environment; it also provides essential perspectives for ensuring environmental sustainability alongside economic development.

To contribute to holistic, ecosystem-based management, we are incorporating socio-cultural dimensions into an increasing number of our research projects. Dialogue with various stakeholder groups is central to this work.
